This is largely true of classical,Wilkie's Medinah Temple recordings with The CSO,being a notable exception. But by this time, most people in the business forgot how to make great classical recordings.
There are far too many great rock and popular stero recordings from the 70s/early 80s to name.

The other component is the sense of spaciousness and envelopment caused by
changes in phase between low frequency sounds. It's ironic that single
subwoofer systems have become popular because this completely kills the
principal natural stereo effect that is the result of having multiple audio
channels. Of course it can also be argued that, with the exception of the
classical music genre, real stereo pretty much went away by the late 1960s.
