Hi Michelle: The Best Practices for Northwest Digital Archives specify the
MARC code rather than the OCLC code. From what we've been able to tell so
far, it makes little difference which one you use so long as you're
consistent. In a consortium environment, the database administrator needs to
know what everyone is doing so that s/he can set up search parameters
accordingly.
A related question that I've been pondering is exactly how different
institutions are populating the <eadid> element and all of its other
attributes. There's currently a lot of room for variation that, if we were
ever to get all these EADs together, could cause a lot of interesting
issues. There's the tag content, then a number of attributes: the
mainagencycode, the URL, the publicid (which we don't use), and the
identifier (which we populate with an ARK).
