Unfortunately, this wouldn't distinguish between page 37 and 37 pages
(total). The latter is used in some A&I databases, sometimes with
another data element for the page numbers, but sometimes alone when the
item is unnumbered. That would argue for the start/end convention for
any encoding of page numeration, with "number" meaning number of pages,
not page numbers. If that's at all clear.
