Volunteer Services Librarian) at the North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically

__Description of Work__

Outreach and volunteer services librarian for statewide library services provided by the Library for
the Blind & Physically Handicapped (LBPH) to over 12,000 North Carolina residents.  Develop
and implement a coordinated state-wide program of outreach to increase awareness and understanding
of LBPH programs, services, and collections to groups and organizations who work with current
and potential users of LBPH services.  Develop and lead the LBPH Volunteer Program (1.5 FTE
and approximately 75 active volunteers).  Recruit volunteers interested in recording books and
magazines of state and regional interest in the new digital recording studios at the LBPH and
other associated activities.  Serve as liaison to the Friends of the North Carolina Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped.  Coordinate preparation of quarterly newsletter to all 12,000 users and
semiannual newsletter sent to all volunteers, and other information publications.

Important note about schedule:  Travel and some evening and weekend work will be required for
outreach effort.  For internal purposes, meets ESC requirement as of 3/14/07.

__Knowledge, Skills and Abilities__

Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques of planning, implementing and evaluating
library services and programs.  Knowledge of professional library science trends, issues, and best
practices in the areas of outreach and marketing to targeted audiences.  Skills in communicating
effectively with a variety of people in writing, verbally, and through public presentations.  Ability to plan,
coordinate and implement a statewide program of library outreach and volunteer services.  Ability
to assert leadership in statewide issues relating to library and information services for North Carolinians
who cannot read standard print due to a visual or physical disability.  Ability to develop partnerships and
alliances with agencies and organizations serving persons with visual and physical disabilities.  Ability to
effectively network and collaborate with other librarians and work cooperatively in a
team-oriented environment. Prefer library experience in program management, outreach activities, and volunteer
services.                                                           


__Training and Experience Requirements__

A master's degree in library science, or graduation from a four-year college or university
supplemented by 30 semester hours in library science and one year of experience as a librarian, or
an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Prefer additional directly related education, training, and
experience as specified in the description of work and knowledge, skills, and abilities sections
above. Interviewing supervisor is Francine Martin.
