Hello -
Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of Department
of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, "The
Investigation of the Lincoln Assassination: Tales of Special Judge
Advocate Henry L. Burnett" next Tuesday, May 15th from 1:00 - 1:45 pm in
the DOI Library.
This month's program will look at the aftermath of the assassination of
President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre on April 15, 1865. The
assassination initiated one of the largest federal investigations ever
seen in United States history. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton
coordinated the investigation and called upon a number of officials from
the military and the War Department to aid in the inquiry. Included
among these officials was General Henry L. Burnett, Judge Advocate
General for the Military Department of Ohio. Burnett was inevitably
given a special task by Secretary Stanton, to serve as the Special Judge
Advocate for the trial of the Lincoln Assassination conspirators.
Please join Ford's Theatre Park Ranger Scott Schultz as he portrays
General Henry L. Burnett (in full dress uniform) for a Living History
program on the investigation of the Lincoln Assassination and the trial
of the conspirators. Learn the behind the scenes stories of the inquiry
and trial from the man who presided over the proceedings.
All are welcome to attend, government and general public. The
Department of the Interior Library is located in the Main Interior
Building, located at 1849 C Street, NW, Room 1151 in Washington.
