Other Specific Duties:
UNDER THE GENERAL SUPERVISION FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TALKING BOOK
SERVICES ADVISES PATRONS IN THE SELECTION OF BOOKS AND MAGAZINES
IN SPECIAL MEDIA; MATCHES AUTHORS, TITLES, AND SUBJECTS WITH SPECIFIC
READING INTERESTS OF PATRONS; PERFORMS ROUTINE/BASIC INTERNET
SEARCHING; CONTACTS PATRONS; RESEARCHES GENERAL REFERENCE
QUESTIONS; CONSULTS WITH OTHER PATRON SERVICES STAFF. ASSISTS
WALK-IN PATRONS. INITIATES INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUESTS. RESPONDS TO
INCOMING PATRON CALLS. USES AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM TO MAINTAIN A
PATRON MASTER FILE OF APPROXIMATELY 8,000 PATRONS AND TO
KEEP RECORDS CURRENT (ADDRESSES, NAMES, READING, INTERESTS, ETC.).
REVIEWS NEW READER APPLICATIONS AND INITIATES CONTACTS/SERVICE TO
APPLICANTS. CREATES COMPUTER PROFILES ON NEW READERS. PREPARES
MONTHLY REPORTS OF INDIVIDUAL READER SERVICES ACTIVITIES/STATISTICS.
State of South Carolina Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
(NOTE: ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS MAY BE APPLICABLE FOR INDIVIDUAL
POSITIONS IN THE EMPLOYING AGENCY.)
A bachelor's degree and experience in library systems.
Additional Requirements:
MASTERS DEGREE IN LIBRARY SCIENCE FROM AN ALA ACCREDITED
INSTITUTION. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF LIBRARY SERVICES TO THE BLIND AND
PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED AS PROVIDED BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS,
NATIONAL LIBRARY SERVICE DESIRABLE. GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF
SPECIAL NEEDS OF PEOPLE WITH VISUAL AND OTHER DISABILITIES IS
NECESSARY. THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE (ORALLY AND IN WRITING) AND
INTERACT WITH THE PUBLIC IS ESSENTIAL.
KNOWLEDGE OF LIBRARY PROCEDURES AND EXPERIENCE WITH AUTOMATED
LIBRARY SYSTEMS IS HIGHLY DESIRABLE.

Requirements to be considered for the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE IN LIBRARY PUBLIC SERVICES PREFERABLY WITH SPECIAL
POPULATIONS. CONSIDERABLE KNOWLEDGE OF BOOKS, AUTHORS AND
GENERES NECESSARY; GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF LIBRARY SERVICE TO THE
BLIND AND HANDICAPPED AS PROVIDED BY THE NATIONAL LIBRARY
SERVICE (NLS) NATIONWIDE NETWORK PREFERABLE. ABILITY TO PERFORM
DETAILED WORK WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF ACCURACY ESSENTIAL.
