MAJOR DUTIES:
The Serial Records Section is responsible for acquiring and managing
over 20,000 print and electronic subscriptions for biomedical and
related serials from over 150 countries. Staffed by nine librarians,
seven library technicians and one technical information specialist,
the Section is organized into geographic area teams each led by an
acquisitions librarian. Librarians are responsible for planning
the work of the team, providing guidance and training to staff on the
team, fostering cooperation and communication among members of the
team and working collegially with other teams in the Section. Teams
are responsible for managing all acquisitions activities for their
geographic area including ordering new titles, maintaining
subscriptions and standing orders, processing invoices for
payment, receiving serial issues, claiming missing issues and
establishing access to electronic resources. Serial
records are maintained using the Voyager Integrated Library System
and the Meridian Electronic Resources Management System.
The position requires knowledge of print and electronic serials and
the ability to assess, develop and implement technology to promote
the successful management of serials; excellent organizational and
analytical skills; the ability to work well in teams both as a member
and a leader; the ability to work flexibly in a rapidly changing
environment; knowledge of integrated library systems; the ability to
utilize report writing, word processing and spreadsheet software to
efficiently manage serials accounts; the ability to foster and
maintain excellent relationships with vendors and staff in person and
via written communication.
