Hello -
Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of Department
of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, "Stephen
Tyng Mather - First Park Service Director" next Tuesday, August 21st
from 1:00 - 1:45 pm in the DOI Library.
Stephen Tyng Mather, the first Director of the National Park Service
(1917-1929), recognized magnificent scenery as the primary criterion for
the establishment of national parks. He was very careful to evaluate
choices for parks, wishing for them to stand as a collection of unique
monuments. Mather was the first park professional to clearly articulate
the policy which allowed the establishment of park concessioners to
provide basic visitor comforts and services in the then undeveloped
parks. His provision of creature comforts connected with park
developments encouraged a curious and supportive public to visit the
national parks.
Please join National Park Service Ranger Joshua Bernick in the
Department of the Interior Library for a look at the many contributions
of Stephen Tyng Mather during the formative years of the National Park
Service.
All are welcome to attend, government and general public. The
Department of the Interior Library is located in the Main Interior
Building, located at 1849 C Street, NW, Room 1151 in Washington.
