To make a slight addition, according to ISO 8601, dates with only year
and month need to be encoded with a hyphen (i.e., YYYY-MM). Dates with
year, month, and day can be encoded either with or without the hyphens
(i.e., YYYY-MM-DD or YYYYMMDD). (For more you could look at ISO 8601
itself, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601). Additionally for
circa dates in EAD you can use the certainty attribute in the unitdate
if you are unsure about when it is.
