Hello -
Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of Department
of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures, "The
McMillan Commission and Plan" next Tuesday, October 16th from 1:00 -
1:45 pm in the DOI Library.
In 1901 Senator James McMillan of Michigan organized the Senate Park
Commission, better known as the McMillan Commission, to undertake a new
plan for the National Mall. The McMillan Plan revived and extended
Pierre L'Enfant’s concept of the Mall as a broad and open vista. The
Commissioners, who included renowned architects Charles McKim, Daniel
Burnham, and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., envisioned the Mall as a
continuous green park framed by rows of elms and white classical museum
buildings. The kite-shaped McMillan Plan extended the Mall westward and
southward over former river beds to form new parkland, Potomac Park, and
the sites for the future Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial.
Please join National Park Service Ranger Eric Martin for a history of
the McMillan Commission and the enlightened plan they instituted that
brought forth what we recognize today as the National Mall.
All are welcome to attend, government and general public. The
Department of the Interior Library is located in the Main Interior
Building, located at 1849 C Street, NW, Room 1151 in Washington.
