Amy and all,
The situation at NYU is aimed at more or less the same situation as Duke. Because we are in the midst of ILS migration, we have not yet initiated regular LTI updating service but we intend to. In the interim, we ask copy catalogers to search series headings (our current system allows a hot-key follow-on search on any controlled field) and to flag anything that is a new series in our database. The flagged series are looked at by one of the serials-experienced copy catalogers.
I'm sure there are series that are slipping through as "Data series" rather than the authorized form. When we get up on the new system (next year, it seems now) and regular LTI processing, we may be in better shape.
We are continuing to do new series authority records as we encounter them in our original cataloging. I haven't noticed any particular increase in number in my own cataloging but a NACO-maker here (Elizabeth Lilker) remembers some in the past year or so that would have been done by LC, based on circumstances such as another title in the series with LC copy and no SAR.
