I have my cataloging students lurk on AUTOCAT for the entire semester but
they aren't allowed to post. We have discussions about various topics in our
CMS. Sometimes I'll read something of interest or will find a particularly
interesting question, and I'll post it to the course discussion board and
ask my students how they they might answer the question. I think observing
what goes on on the list gives the students a better understanding of the
things practicing catalogers grapple with on a day-to-day basis, and it
helps them feel better if they are struggling in their own cataloging work
at any particular time...
