The PREMIS Editorial Committee has been discussing the issue of
extensibility for PREMIS semantic units. There are places where it might
be useful to be able to extend PREMIS to use externally developed
specifications or locally defined elements. Some examples might be to add
more granularity under Environment or EventOutcome or to use an externally
developed schema, e.g. under Rights. However, we are trying to come up
with scenarios for how people might want to use extensions and what the
issues are for parsing, validating, etc.
We would like implementers or potential implementers to respond by telling
us where they can see a need for extending PREMIS and under what
conditions this might be desirable. We are thinking mainly about PREMIS as
an exchange format for preservation metadata; what is done in a local
repository is not really what is of interest here.
Please respond to this message to me directly or to the list and
contribute any scenarios/use cases you might have that might require
extensibility and how you would deal with it in terms of processing your
data.
We would like comments within the next week, so, please by Dec. 12.
