Hello Richard,
the work you mention was and is very controversial among jazz discographers.
For me there are two basic points: it is true that it has been mainly a
compilation of older discographies with very little original work, and there
is a lot of mistakes. At the same time it's about the only place you can
find easily and at a glance a rough list of a jazz artist's discography, and
I have been using it quite a lot since I bought the book edition. It
requires special care to double-check the information, but this is true of
any source. The latest versions of it on CdRom allow searches for any
musician (i. e. not only leaders but members of the band) and song title (a
vey useful feature), as well as copying and pasting the results of the
search into any document. None of the other classic and pioneering works in
the field, of whose research Lord benefited, has been updated with such
modern facilities. I haven't tried the online edition yet. In short, there
are many limits to it, but as of today I would not do without it.
Hope this helps
