Audio & Video Preservation Manager (PN.31260),
Operations and Preservation - Digital and AV Preservation,
Sydney APS Level 6, (AU$63,209 - $70,133pa)

Closing date: Friday, 8 February 2008

Duties:
The National Archives is seeking a highly motivated and skilled manager to lead a small technical team responsible for audio and video preservation in its Sydney Office. The position provides the opportunity to help build a team, the technical infrastructure and the future direction for audiovisual preservation, particularly in the digital domain, in a national organisation, which helps Australians better understand their culture and government.

The National Archives of Australia has the responsibility to preserve and manage the archives of the nation - the significant records created by the Australian Government. This includes audiovisual material created by our national broadcasters and government agencies. Our holdings include a vast range of formats from sound recordings on lacquer disk through to ¼" tape recordings and video recordings on 2" videotape, U-matic tape and Digital Betacam.

In addition to audiovisual content on physical media, the National Archives is managing incoming digital file formats as well as creating in-house digital records as part of its preservation copying program. It is the responsibility of the Digital and Audiovisual Preservation section to implement preservation strategies including copying of the most at-risk records owing to technical obsolescence and physical deterioration in accordance with relevant legislation including the Archives Act (1983).

As a team leader you will mentor and supervise the technical staff of the audio and video preservation unit. You will use your extensive knowledge of current and obsolete audio and video formats, and production equipment, to plan technical infrastructure improvements and build up the expertise in your team members.

The AV Manager (Audio & Video) will be expected to:

1. Undertake project work relating to the development and upgrade to video and audio facilities with particular emphasis on digitisation technologies.

2. Support the Assistant Director with the management, work planning, co-ordination, budgeting, strategic planning and monitoring of preservation projects and operations relating to the audio and video units.

3. Manage a technical team, clearly communicate a sense of direction and effectively assist and guide team members to achieve outcomes.

4. Conduct research and development relating to audiovisual preservation, including the development of technical and preservation standards, procedures and guidelines.

The successful candidate will also be proactive, be able to think outside the square and be a team player, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.

Please be aware that to be eligible to work at the National Archives you would normally be an Australian citizen, however exceptions may be made depending on experience and ranking. Please note this in your application.
