John Attig inquired:
<<Penn State is re-evaluating its procedures for contributing Name
Authority Records through NACO. We would like to know whether your
institution has a policy that every NAR is checked by someone other
than the cataloger who created the record before it is
contributed. If so, do you feel that this level of quality control
is justified in terms of the errors identified?>>
Two of us (the local trainers) split review duties for
newly-trained NACO contributors but our goal is to have everyone
ultimately independent. During the training we have emphasized that even
those declared independent should seek help for anything out of the
ordinary or where there is uncertainty. Everything under review goes
into our OCLC local save file where we have categories indicating the
status of each NAR. This seems to work quite well.
No one is perfect and I find myself catching errors in my own work
(usually a typo or a diacritic) in which case I flag it and fix it when
it is available. I also occasionally ask our PCC Liaison at LC for an
opinion if I'm not certain about something. I usually try to avoid this
because they usually have their hands full with BFM.
