Why didn't they offer courses like that when I was a student? Although I don't know how much cataloging I would have done . . .
The Adopt-a-Park-Library program, unfortunately, doesn't include spending a semester in a National Park. On the other hand, it doesn't require spending a semester away from home. The cataloging is done using photocopies of title pages and versos, so students who can't play hooky from home can still participate.
The partnership would also be with a local park, so I'm working on incorporating it as a service-learning project. LSU is encouraging and supporting that kind of community engagement.
