The Engineering Division of SLA is providing two Continuing Education
(CE) courses for professional development on Saturday, June 14, as part
of SLA 2008 in Seattle, WA. These classes will focus on searching
resources at different levels of access from the Defense Technical
Information Center (DTIC).
DTIC does not hold many classes beyond the DC area, and this is your
opportunity to hear about major changes ahead for DTIC services. DTIC
will soon be releasing an improved customer interface with new search
capabilities and three separate levels of access. DTIC Online (Public)
will be a gateway to publicly releasable resources and will lead to many
free full-text documents in the Public Scientific and Technical
Information Network (STINET) collection. DTIC Online (Controlled
Access) will integrate the Private STINET Technical Reports, Research
Summaries, and other documents; the Research & Engineering Portal
resources, including budget information; and the Total Electronic
Migration System (TEMS) database with documents from the Information
Analysis Centers (IACs). DTIC Online (Classified) will be available
only on the SIPRNet.
The first CE class, "Defense Information for the Research Community," is
geared toward registered or eligible users of DTIC. This training will
focus on search techniques for controlled information resources and
services available to aid researchers with their information needs.
The second class, "Defense Information for All," will highlight public
resources for ALL users. The course will include how to search the
Public STINET collection and how to set up free email alerts about new
documents.
The cost for each four-hour class is $199, and conference registration
is available at
http://www.sla.org/content/Events/conference/ac2008/planner/index.cfm.
The registration form is available online or at
http://www.sla.org/PDFs/SLA2008/08conregform.pdf as a PDF.
