There are also other options:
1) Most likely is that only the clients with a priori knowledge of the
extra elements will present these elements. Other clients just ignore
them.
2) Stylesheets can present "unknown" elements and display them with
their tag-name. The writer of the client software/XSLT might decide to
add these elements in the stylesheet.
There is a big gap between HTML responses in which a server can send
anything useful and XML responses that are restricted to a schema. The
DCX schema helps to have something in between.
