Dear Customers:
As you may know, ebrary has been developing a new Java-based Reader that will eventually replace our current plug-in on Windows and Linux platforms. Based on feedback from the library community, the new Reader boasts a number of enhancements and new features, including better annotating capabilities, the ability to transform text into a hyperlink to a URL of the end-user's choice, and improved keyboard shortcuts to assist end-users with special accessibility needs. For more information, please read our press release at http://www.responsetrack.net/lnk/ebrary867924/?149DO03DQE0.
In the next few weeks, we are planning to make the new Reader available to all customers. End-users would have a choice of old and new Readers, with the old Reader being the default. We will send you more information, including a list of frequently asked questions, as we approach the launch date.
As a first step, we need to make sure your library terminals meet the system requirements for the new Reader, which include the following:
* Minimum Java Standard Edition Runtime Environment 1.6 (JRE version 6). Please see additional information at the end of this email.
* 512MB RAM Minimum; 1GB RAM or more recommended.
* Linux, Windows XP, Windows Vista. (Macintosh is not supported at this time.)
* Mozilla Firefox browser version 2.0 or newer, or Windows Internet Explorer v. 6 or newer.
Please take a few minutes to complete a short survey about your library's ability to meet these requirements. The survey is available at http://www.responsetrack.net/lnk/surveymonkey867925/?149DO03DQE0. Your response by May 30, 2008, would be much appreciated.

In the meantime, we have set up a test channel with the new Reader and encourage you to try its new features for yourself. To use the new Reader, please go to

*It is imperative that Java JRE 1.6 or newer is installed in order for the new ebrary Reader Java Client to function.
To check your Java version on Windows:
1. Go to http://www.responsetrack.net/lnk/java867928/?149DO03DQE0.
2. Click on the "Do I have Java?" link.
3. Click on the link that asks you to verify Java.
To check your Java version on UNIX/Linux:
1. Go to http://www.responsetrack.net/lnk/java867928/?149DO03DQE0.
2. Type "java -version" (without quotes) at the command line.
Again, the ebrary Reader Java client will NOT function on computers that don't have Java JRE 1.6 or newer.
