The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a proactive,
service-oriented, and knowledgeable individual for the position of Head of
Monographic Services. The position has administrative responsibility for
the leadership of a newly redesigned department focused upon the efficient
and effective acquisition and cataloging of monographic materials (both
print and electronic). The department is responsible for expending a
monographic materials budget of ca. $5,000,000 annually. The incumbent will
lead a team of knowledgeable and dedicated staff in meeting the challenges
of an emerging and rapidly expanding operation. The position reports to the
Associate University Librarian for Technical Services and Systems. The
Monographic Services Department acquires print and non-print materials
(including e-books) using a variety of acquisitions methods: firm orders,
approval plans, blanket orders, gifts, and standing orders. The Department
places the orders, claims outstanding materials, receives the material and
processes invoices for payment. The Department establishes shelf-ready
arrangements with library material vendors. After receipt, the Department
does random quality control checks on the shelf-ready materials received
and performs FastCat treatment for mainstream titles with acceptable
cataloging copy at the point of receipt.
Responsibilities
Provides strong leadership, direction, coordination and strategic planning
to enable the department to meet its annual expenditure and cataloging
goals; leads a staff of two librarians and 15 paraprofessionals in the
efficient ordering, receipt, invoice verification, and cataloging
(shelf-ready or FastCat) of monographic materials; establishes and
maintains professional relationships with library material vendors and
publishers; negotiates with them regarding cost of materials and processing
services; in collaboration with the Head of Accounting Services and the
Head of the Order Management Section, monitors the expenditure of the
monographic funds within established deadlines; negotiates licenses for
electronic books as a member of a licensing team with members from
Electronic Resources & Serials Management Department; represents the
department as part of the library management team on groups such as the
Department Heads, the Collection Development Council, etc; collaborates
closely with colleagues in Collection Development, Accounting, Resource
Description and Management, and Electronic Resources and Serials Management
to meet collection management and access goals and standards in a timely
and cost-effective manner; and monitors developments in the field of
monographic acquisitions and cataloging and participates actively in
relevant professional organizations.
Qualifications
Required:
ALA-accredited MLS. Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible
relevant acquisitions experience, including supervision, budget oversight,
and vendor relations. Demonstrated project management experience. Excellent
organizational skills. Experience with an integrated library system (ILS).
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work
collaboratively and cooperatively with many colleagues internally and
externally. High service ethic. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and
manage both big picture issues and details. Strong critical thinking and
problem-solving skills. Enthusiasm for an innovative and evolving
environment. Familiarity with licensing concepts and terminology.
Preferred:
Experience with Innovative's Millennium ILS. Complex process management
experience. Proficiency with creating and manipulating spreadsheets and
databases. Strong familiarity or direct experience with cataloging concepts
and standards (e.g., AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, and MARC21 formats).
Broad knowledge of trends in the domestic and foreign monographic
publishing industries (both print and electronic). Experience in working
with library materials vendors in establishing shelf-ready workflows.
Experience with license or contract negotiations.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of
