Network Bulletin No.: 08-25
Date: July 25, 2008
Subject: Staff, network
Index term: 2009 schedule of orientation
for network staff
Network staff may now register for the 2009 orientation program. The three-day in-depth training about
NLS is held in Washington, D.C., and provides a comprehensive overview. Participants will have the
opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of NLS operations and services, to interact with NLS staff, and
to communicate with colleagues from around the network. They will be briefed on NLS functions by
representatives from each of its divisions, sections, and offices, with time allotted for questions.
In addition, each registrant may choose two one-hour "Experience NLS" sessions on timely topics such as
Internet accessibility, selection for the national collection, the Comprehensive Mailing List System
(CMLS), or the digital download project (NLS BARD). Attendees will also tour the Library of Congress
buildings on Capitol Hill. A sample schedule is available at
www.loc.gov/nls/nlm/4_6_OrientationSchedule.html.
__Participants are expected to attend the entire program.__
The 2009 calendar year orientation schedule is:
March 25 27, Wednesday-Friday
June 16 18, Tuesday-Thursday (plus a machine-repair workshop on Friday,
June 19)
October 21-23, Wednesday-Friday
The 2005 __Revised Standards and Guidelines of Service__ (Standard 11.10), published by the American
Library Association, endorses sending appropriate staff members who have completed at least six months
on the job to an NLS orientation.
