Network Bulletin No: 08-38
Date: September 26, 2008
Subject: Machines
Index term: Status of Available C-1 Players
NLS has taken a snapshot of the availability of C-1 players based on machine reports submitted for July
2008 and the individual reader and deposit collections totals from the 2007 annual report. According to
the attached report, C-1 availability is assessed as on target.
In July 2008 the entire reserve inventory of new C-1 players at Multistate Center West (MSCW) had
been distributed to network libraries. In August 2008 the inventory of contract-repaired and screened
machines was zero. As a result, contract-repaired and screened C-1 players from MSCW are no longer
readily available.
NLS's contract repairs continue, and its screening operation is being increased. These efforts will
produce a few hundred machines each month to replenish the MSCW inventory. The screening process
over the past few years determined that approximately one-half of machines marked by the network as
repaired were still working when they were screened.
Jim Miller, NLS equipment control officer (ECO), will now approve the availability of C-1 players from
MSCW. As a result, the ECO may be required to reduce library-requested machine quantities.
The remaining C-1 player inventory consists of three types: 1) machines requiring repair; 2) machines
marked as repaired but only one-half are ready to be sent to patrons; and 3) machines screened or
contract-repaired. Following approval by the ECO, MSCW will fill orders from the third category twice
each month, depending on the available inventory. The ECO will review requests for player shipments
from the first and second categories as they are received.
