Steven:
You might also look for the authors David Weber and Lois McMaster Bujold, if you have not read them. David Weber wrote a series of books with the main character Honor Harrington and Lois McMaster Bujold wrote a series of books with the main character Miles Vorkosigan.
Maybe not how you would describe "space opera" but good solid characters, plots, backgrounds set in a "science fiction" "space ship" "future world" with a military shoot them up (or not) feel.
These books do need to be read somewhat in order, although the Miles Vorkosigan books were not published along the character's life time line but jumped from point to point.
Books are published by Baen, and both authors have also written fantasy.
I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.

I will indeed download your novel and take a look!
I'm a librarian writing a science fiction readers advisory book at the
moment, so I'm looking at a wide variety of authors and works and trying to
be as inclusive as I can.
Thank you *very* much. It's not often I get to correspond with a Nebula
award-winning author.
Sincerely,
Steven
