Director of Technical Services
Ottenheimer Library (Position # 587)
University of Arkansas at Little Rock


The Ottenheimer Library of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
(UALR) seeks a senior-level librarian to lead departments directly
involved in the acquisition, organization and provision of
information resources in all formats. The Director of Technical
Services will provide vision for the departments of
acquisitions/serials cataloging and information technology. The
successful candidate will develop innovative programs to facilitate
change and promote an environment of continuous improvement.

The Director of Technical Services reports directly to the Dean of
the Library and works closely with other senior leaders who have
responsibilities for Public Services, Administrative Services, and
Archive/Special Collections.

 This is a faculty-status, tenure-track position. The successful
candidate will be required to meet the Library’s criteria for
promotion and tenure, which include librarianship, service and
scholarship/research.

Located in Little Rock, Arkansas’ urban center, the University of
Arkansas at Little Rock is a state-supported metropolitan university.
 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide vision, direction and operational management for
all technical service functions (acquisitions, serials and
cataloging).
2. Supervise and evaluate Heads of Acquisitions/Serials,
Cataloging and Information Technology.
3. Coordinate technical services and IT activities and
workflow with other areas of the Library and University.
4. Coordinate and plan for technological changes in the
Library; oversee library staff responsible for maintenance and
support of the Library’s on-line systems and computing equipment.
5. Participate in library-wide programs such as collection
development, assessment and strategic planning.
6. Take a leadership role, locally and nationally, in
identifying and implementing new developments in the field through
active participation in professional organizations.

REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS; at least five years of
professional experience in a research or academic library in
technical services areas such as acquisitions, cataloging, serials,
and information technology; demonstrated understanding of academic
teaching and research needs; ability to view issues from a broad
library-wide perspective; excellent interpersonal, communication, and
planning skills.


PREFERRED: Evidence of three years successful management and
supervision of librarians and paraprofessionals; experience with
integrated library systems; proven skills in the application of
technology to enhance effectiveness in technical services operations;
experience with assessment of library services, strategic planning
and project management; second advanced degree; qualifications for
appointment at rank of Associate Professor.

Library and University Environment
The Ottenheimer Library’s materials budget is approximately $2
million annually. Its materials holdings include: nearly a half
million monographs, 11,000 electronic books, access to over 28,000
electronic journals, 3,600 active periodical subscriptions, over of
one million microforms, and 115+ electronic databases. The Library’s
integrated library system is Innovative Interfaces.
