I have started to collect data ... about attributes/qualifiers referring to
It seems that most of the attributes/qualifiers, which can be used for term
usage (in terminology in general), could also be used for names of
I got the impression that
(1) the typology of language grouping needs further refinement;
(2) the attributes/qualifiers for language names
- need further refinement on the one hand and
- prioritization (e.g. for ordering or other purposes) on the other hand.
This is important for the future data model for the ISO 639 data.
The sequence, in which several language names for a given language (whether
in English, or in French, or as original names) are presented to the user,
is meaningful and, therefore, needs to be decided case by case (incl. cases,
were transregional languages may have different names in different countries
with different attributes/qualifiers).
It might be useful and user-friendly, if certain attributes/qualifiers could
be represented at the user-interface
- by position in the display sequence
- by different colour
- by different style (boldface, lightface, italics, etc.)
when the user obtains search results in the future ISO 639 database.
(of course that depends on the design of the user interface)

I am forwarding this message since it came as a request, although I don't
think this is an easy thing for us to do at this point. I will write the
