Portico Value Statement for Libraries
Portico’s preservation service provides a “dark archive” to
assure permanent access to scholarly e-journals, e-books, and digitized
materials. The Archive is essentially an insurance policy to protect
libraries from losing e-content purchased directly from publishers. When
content preserved in Portico’s vast archive becomes unavailable from
other sources, Portico will “light-up” access to the impacted
content to all participating
libraries, whether or not they ever had a subscription to the content.
Portico offers libraries the opportunity to participate in the
preservation service through an Annual Archive Support payment (AAS). A
participating library’s AAS is determined using their total library
materials expenditure (LME).
Through Portico participation, libraries have a mechanism to protect
their investment in e-content purchased and accessed from publishers.
Moreover, libraries can rely on content preserved by Portico as their
ultimate backup, thereby decreasing the need to expend costly resources
to buy, process, and store print. With Portico, libraries can make a
secure and reliable transition to an e-only environment, while making
effective use of valuable floor space once held by print collections.
