I'm finally sitting down to spec out how to do something in METS we've long known we needed and I always assumed would be easy, but now that I actually tried to do it, I have run into a big brick wall. Maybe it's just Friday afternoon cognitive slowness, but for the life of me I'm stumped.
We're working on METS specs for multi-volume titles. Journals, newsletters, monographic series, etc. We want a two-level structure where a "big" METS gives the structure of the title down to some reasonable level, then includes <mptr>s to "small" METS (say, a journal issue) that could itself have some internal structure. This is working just fine, but we also want the "small" METS to link back to the "big" METS. That's what I can't figure out how to do. It doesn't seem to make sense to put an <mptr> in the structMap for this, because the METS being linked to isn't part of "this" object, but rather one hierarchically above it. I don't have any other ideas, though.
I see Patrick Yott/Brown posted <http://listserv.loc.gov/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0705&L=METS&D=0&I=-3&P=1321> some samples of their METS for cases like this to the METS list in May 2007, but I can't seem to get the full attachments out of the listserv archive so I can't see if there's something for me to rip off there. I also see other messages about folks linking in this direction with MODS <relatedItem>, but we're really looking for something in METS proper. Is anyone doing this?
