Digital Initiatives Librarian
The University of New Mexico Libraries (UL) has an opening
(Position#0800890) for a Digital Initiatives Librarian. This is a
full-time, 12 month faculty position which reports directly to the
Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources, Special Collections and the
Center for Southwest Research (CSWR). The tenure status and faculty rank
of this position is negotiable based on experience and professional
qualifications. The desired start date is July 1, 2009. The annual
salary is negotiable from a minimum of $50,000 and includes full
benefits.
Position Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Librarian to play a
leadership role in planning, implementing and supporting digital
collections and services. This librarian will work closely with the CSWR
curatorial staff, UL subject liaisons, members of the Cataloging and
Discovery Services division and IT staff in initiating projects to
enhance the university’s scholarly communications and publications
programs. This librarian will take the lead in developing policies and
procedures for the production and management of digital content,
metadata, workflow, and intellectual property issues. This librarian
will also develop and provide training, and perform outreach to inform
the campus community about the UL’s digital initiatives.
Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
§ Master’s degree earned from an ALA-accredited Library/Information
Science program.
§ Two years experience managing digital collections.
Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:
§ Demonstrated knowledge of digital library content and metadata
standards, such as EAD, METS, and Dublin Core including demonstrated
competence with XML.
§ Demonstrated technical experience with current digital collection
architectures, platforms, and products such as CONTENTdm and DSpace.
§ Demonstrated knowledge of Institutional Repositories management,
including policy matters, intellectual property issues and strategies
for securing appropriate content.
§ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and
colleagues, as well as independently, in a dynamic environment.
§ Demonstrated service experience with diverse populations.
§ Experience with project management.
§ Minimum two years of professional library experience in an academic
or research library.
§ Additional degree in information or computer science-related
discipline.
§ Demonstrated leadership ability.
Primary Duties Provide leadership in the continued development and
management of the UNM digital repository system. Provide technical
expertise to continue development and enhancements for the Rocky
Mountain Online Archives. Provide expertise and leadership for current
and future UNM escholarship projects such as electronic journal
publishing and data curation. Initiate and promote scholarly
communication/publishing initiatives. Provide expertise on intellectual
property issues.
Maintain awareness and develop in-depth knowledge of new technology,
relevant national standards and best practices related to digitization
and scholarship. Coordinate training for digitization and associated
standards. Fulfill tenure requirements as detailed in the UNM Faculty
Handbook (http://www.unm.edu/~handbook/) May perform supervisory
duties.
Environment
The University of New Mexico Libraries contains over 2 million volumes
and includes four branch libraries: Centennial Science and Engineering
Library, Fine Arts & Design Library, Parish Memorial Library (business
and economics), and Zimmerman Library (education, humanities and social
sciences). Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest
Research and Special Collections. The UL is a regional library in the
Federal Depository Library Program. The UL uses Innovative Interfaces,
