I urge you to consider participating in two exciting new initiatives sponsored by the FLICC Human Resources Working Group.
The mentor and coach programs are designed to attract the best possible candidates to federal jobs, and then to provide support to new librarians once they are hired and in place.
The first initiative is a mentor program which will match practicing federal librarians with both seasoned and newly-minted information professional who are seeking employment in the federal sector. We are hoping to have a large number of mentors to accomodate the variety of interests that applicants will have.
While mentoring is often entails a longer commitment of time, the opportunity to learn is usually mutual. Colleagues coming from other sectors can provide insight from their different perspectives and recent graduates share their knowledge of new theories and professional practices.
The main goal of the mentor program is to help prospective federal librarians navigate through the process of identifying and applying for federal jobs. We recognize efforts are now underway to streamline the application process, but still feel that a little help goes a long way in our environment!
The coach initiative is designed to provide specific assistance to new hires as they face doing an activity for the first time. We are looking for coaches who can provide advice in areas like federal budgeting, procurement, hiring, employment relations, performance plans and evaluations, etc.
Coaching is potentially less time intensive. Overtime, we will hope to gather "best practices" to provide a resources to both coaches and new librarians.
Please look upon these initiatives as a way of sharing your expertise and experience, and investing in the future of our profession and our country.
We will be hosting an initial meeting to discuss the details of each program on June 4 at 2 p.m. in the Whittal Pavillion (Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress). This meeting will immediately follow the Learning@Lunch program on Legislative History which starts at noon.
