Richard's citation of 1958 sounds about right to me. The earliest open
reel quarter-track machine I had was a Sony TC-555, which I believe came
in both a two track and quarter track version, and was released in 1959.
Not exactly sure on the Ampex consumer R-to-R dates. The RCA cartridges
I have in my collection are definitely 1958, though.
I have some old audio magazines from the period, which I will peruse
when I have a moment (yeah, right...)
