In my experience, the best solution is an outboard mic preamp or
mixer of some sort. Feeding mic level signals into a PC is
frequently a recipe for noise and distortion, as much because of the
high Radio Frequency environment inside a computer case as the almost
uniformly poor quality of sound card preamps. It is much easier and
cheaper to build a line input than it is to build a mic input.
