While I can't recall the 122's transport system specifics, you might have
some luck using a dual-capstan deck, such as the higher-level Nakamichi's --
often the second capstan helps feed the tape properly along the guides &
heads where single-units get bogged down.
Last suggestion would be to make sure the graphite-sheet inside the housing
is in good shape to help the tape move through the mechanism more easily.
