Cataloger (3 year temporary position)
Columbia University Libraries is seeking applications for the position
of* Cataloger. This is a temporary position ending **July 1, 2012** with
possibility of extension.*
Reporting to the Director of the Original and Special Materials
Cataloging Division, the Cataloging Librarian provides full (or other
appropriate level) original cataloging and complex copy cataloging for
continuing resources and monographs in a variety of languages and
formats, including rare materials, and applies standards for
bibliographic description, authority control, subject analysis, and
classification as appropriate to specific resources and projects. In
addition to new cataloging, the Cataloging Librarian will plan and
coordinate metadata emendation and enrichment projects.
The successful candidate will have:
· Accredited MLS (or an equivalent combination of education and
experience).
· Knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations,
Library of Congress subject headings, Library of Congress and other
classification systems.
· Previous experience cataloging in all formats and in a variety
of metadata schemas.
· Demonstrated awareness of relevant new and emerging standards
and technologies and a high level understanding of digital information
systems and software.
· Working knowledge of two foreign languages
· Excellent communication skills, creativity and the
demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and complex
environment
Preferred qualifications include:
* Knowledge of PCC, NACO and CONSER guidelines.
* Experience cataloging rare material (principally pre-1800) and
special formats such as archival finding aids.
