NLS Operations Alert
No. 09-40
DATE : August 14, 2009
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Robert Norton
SUBJECT: Digital book distribution
As of today, August 14, NLS has initiated shipment of digital talking-book players to network
libraries.
NLS is experiencing difficulties with digital talking-book titles. Though the cartridges meet
NLS technical specifications, contractors continue to encounter quality problems with labels
for mailing containers. These problems include adhesive warping/bubbling, smudging of the
print, and inconsistent printing.
While these quality issues are serious, they do not warrant a delay in the national rollout of
the digital program. NLS has therefore determined that these books will be shipped
immediately.
Network libraries will first receive the following titles at about the same time as the initial
shipment of digital players arrives:
-- DB 67190 Speed of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything
-- DB 67341 Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a
War on American Ideals
-- DB 67530 Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism
Additional titles will be shipped as available.
Libraries that notice defective labels should contact NLS Quality Assurance Section head
Bob Norton immediately to report the problem. He may be reached at (202) 707-0505, (202)
707-0711 (fax), or [log in to unmask]
Please be assured that NLS has worked closely with the contractors to correct these
deficiencies and will continue to do so. Every effort will be extended to resolve these issues
as quickly as possible.
