Are most of these examples really all that significant? They strike me
as pretty typical for the writing that makes it to the NYT Bestseller lists,
and not Dan Brown's own particular sins.
If anything, I would fault the editors through whose hands these books
went. Given that Prof Pullum isn't for whom Brown is writing, it's just
possible that these infelicities are intentional, meant for the discriminating
palates of the unwashed masses, who probably have different standards
of what is good to read.
Not that I'm defending Dan Brown, but as a fan of SF I'm quite conscious
of sitting in a fragile glass house.
