I know that for the NBC Symphony NBC ran simultaneous lathes--lots of
them. Perhaps this was considered important enough to have a backup,
but what you suggest makes more sense: that you have copies cut on the
west coast, and LC copies from NYC. Mike B. will have the best
perspective on NBC recording practices of the time. I have yet to
figure out what they recorded and what they didn't save.
I didn't look too closely at the SONIC records. Were all the discs
from the NBC collection at LC? I know that LC has transferred to tape
all NBC lacquers through the mid-1950s. They ought to be all be in
SONIC. But do ask the RSRC folks to send you a copy of a print-out
from the NBC disc inventory microfiche. It should list what was
recorded by NBC, but of course discs could have been lost and/or
broken between that event and their getting to LC in the late 1970s.
