Hi Everyone -
Please join us for the next in our regular monthly series of free
Department of the Interior Library Park Ranger Speaker Series lectures,
entitled "Footprints Along Rock Creek," on Thursday, October 22nd from 1:00
- 1:45 pm in the Department of the Interior Library.
Documentary research in Rock Creek Park has uncovered many interesting
details about its history. A number of its sites can be associated with
well known historical characters and events, from John Carroll to
African-American tenants of the 1890’s to the turmoil of the 1960’s.
Native American camp sites dating from 2500 BC to 1400 AD have also been
discovered, along with colonial tenancies, nineteenth-century dwellings,
and Civil War military artifacts from the Battle of Fort Stevens in 1864.
Please join Park Ranger Ron Harvey as he uncovers the historic footprints
left by man along the Rock Creek Valley throughout the ages. Learn how
these footprints shaped the cultural landscape of Rock Creek Park; from the
Paleo-Indian habitation of the valley, through European colonization, the
Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, the Civil Rights struggle, up to
today.
All that are interested are invited. The DOI Library is located in the
