Subject: Re: [ARSCLIST] Cylinder Distortion
Dear Steve Smolian :
No Edison cylinder is properly heard without the benefit of the horn
structure of the Edison Cygnet horn ! Other wise ; it is like listening to
someone play a bugle with only the mouthpiece and without the rest of the
instrument . At the Edison studios , empirical testing of recordings was
the Edison recording staff using such horns on the reproducing phonographs
during the course of recording sessions . Therefore : The reproduction of
an Edison Cylinder using such equipment comes closer to what was approved
and sold by the " Cylinder Division Of Thomas A. Edison Inc. " than any
other method currently available . In fact the electrical dubbings from
cylinder records are much more distorted (due to the lack of the
and no amount of parametric , shelving or octave band eq can properly
compensate for an approach which is incorrect from the get go .
Until a perfect DSP algorithm duplicating the Edison ( exponential taper )
Cygent horn is developed , the Edison Concert Series phonographs do the
best job of authentically recreating the listening experience of these
cylinder records .
So the approach is viable and correct and not shear nonsense ! And even
though T.A.E. was partially deaf , the recording engineers and in
; the director of the Edison Studio ; Mr. Walter Miller was not !
Steve ; it is obvious that you are no fan of Thomas Edison ; but we are
all involved in one way or another in the industry which his inventive
genius brought into existence !
Let us send you an mp3 of BA 2175 and tell us what you think then !
