thanks a lot for this great example. It really helps to see, how things like
this are done in practice and it also encourages me to do it in the way I
already suggested in my initial post. Also thanks for forwarding this to
another METS expert.
Breaking news: While writing this post I found the solution. I do this
(organising) stuff within METS. I'll keep just very basic information about
the hosting newspaper withing every article (just title, issue, page
numbers, and a identifier link to the representation-URL of the physical
METS-Structure Map). Then I do a complete independent METS:dmdSec containing
a MODS block for a very detailed newspaper description. The relation between
the articles and the newspaper I'll put then into the METS structure Map
(and file section). I am not through this with every detail, but I am pretty
sure this will work (I hope at least - if not I am going to bother the METS
newsgroup :) ).
However I am of course always open to any other suggestions.
So the rest of the post is only kept for entertaining you :)
Just one more question:
When your identifier ("MMCID.12345" within your example) points to a (more
descriptive) "parent entity", it reads like this parent entity is not only
within the very same xml file - by using the term "parant entity" it also
sounds like it's within the same MODS block or - from a METS kind of view:
within the same <METS:dmdSec> section.
Is this the case? Or is it an external file anyway?
Because if it is in the same MODS block, I am afraid I can not link to it
from other METS:dmdSEC-sections (because I understand [which maybe wrong]
the METS universe is not able to use wrapped in MODS-IDs).
It is a bit of my fault that I didn't show the METS structure of my document
(also because of this being the MODS mailing list) - but it maybe necessary
to understand my dilemma:
Very reduced METS structure:
- MODS block with one article and it's "hosting" newspaper as related item
- MODS block with another article and the same "hosting" newspaper as
- scanned Pages, thumbnails, cut out articles etc. - also containing
file-groups involving the unique dmdSec ID from above for referring
- for showing page by page
- for showing article by article, involving the unique dmdSec ID from above
So the article views are organized from the logical METS structure map (and
every article shows the same hosting newspaper just with varying page numbers).
Still I am not sure, whether i should put the Newspaper Description (which I
do not want to do in it's epic glory inside every article)...
A - into it's own METS:dmdSec (but is there a clean way to link there from
the MODS block within other dmdSECs?) ... Ahhhhhhh... The lights just went
on. It starts to get clear now... I think I've found it. See above (breaking
Thanks everyone for helping me out - it was a pleasure to get in contact
