Roger,
Koussevitzky.com knows about these discs. I "am" koussevitzky.com; it's one
of my web sites.
The items that he asked about were 16" AFRS discs. There is no need to
guess. The information that I supplied was read directly off the discs by
me. I have a set (among several hundred others.)
These were pressed generally by RCA but were only distributed to the radio
stations of the AFRS; they were not distributed within the USA to radio
stations. Other discs were pressed by various military and government
agencies, such as the State Department and the OIAA, again for foreign
distribution.
There were some parts of concerts that were pressed on smaller size discs,
such as works of modern American composers, and composers that had fled the
oppressions of wartime Europe. Your set may be one of those. Note that these
were all vinyls. I have several and have seen others. Examples of some are
the Harris Fifth Symphony, the Shostakovich 9th Symphony and the Bartok
Concerto for Orchestra, all with Koussevitzky and the BSO. Documentation for
these smaller discs is scant. I have spent weeks at the Library of Congress
going through their collections and of these smaller discs they have few.
They have very many 16" discs, though.
In this forum in 2007, you said:
"I have a recording of the Hanson #1 by Koussevitsky and the BSO,dated
either 1941 or '42. Three sides, on two 10" microgroove acetates."
You now say that you have the Hanson 3rd from 1945, on pressed discs. Do you
actually have that set to hand or are you referring to it by memory?
If what you have is a set of "acetates" (aka lacquers), then it is not
"pressed."
A scan of the labels would clear up the confusion. Would you be so kind as
to supply some?
I do not doubt that the Hanson 3rd could have been pressed on smaller discs;
I doubt it would be on microgroove, because of the 1945 date.
The Hanson 3rd broadcast from 1945 was on AFRS BSO #79, 16" vinyls,
"standard" groove.

I am guessing these might be the some of same ones that RCA and NBC (Same
difference as far as records go.) pressed for regular radio as 10" and 12"
Lps in the 40s.I have the 1945 concert with the Hanson symphony listed here
http://www.koussevitzky.com/
as a 10" Lp set.If you have live recordings they don't know about, they would
no doubt be very interested.
Roger

They are categorically not. All of the discs in this first AFRS BSO series
(years 1943 through 1948) were from live broadcasts. Zero were from RCA
recordings.

There are no catalog numbers per se. The AFRS discs were generally labeled
with the series name and program number.
These are labeled:
"BOSTON SYMPHONY" Number 38, parts 1 through 4
Matrix numbers:
Part 1: SS-3-4-5
Part 2: SS-3-4-6
Part 3: SS-3-4-7
Part 4: SS-3-4-8
Also etched on the discs is the program name and number, and the timing of
each side.
Often discs in this series have an etched date, but these do not have that.
No contents are listed on the labels.

Can someone provide matrix nos./catalog numbers for the following:
Armed Forces Radio Service, Boston Symphony No. 38 [16 inch, vinyl, 2 discs,
4 sides].
GRETCHANINOV: Ecumenical Mass, opus 174 1944/02/26
label scan would also be very useful.
Thanks!
Best wishes, Thomas.
