The short answer is no, there is no EAD-specific element for handling
filing characters. You'll need to handle this with a "best practice".
How you handle it depends on what you want to achieve. Do you just want
to indicate the number non-filing characters? Or do you want to use the
information for "sorting" purposes? Both uses are doable, although you
might encode them differently.
For instance, if your title was:
The John D. Smith papers
A Contemporary Theatre records
The filing title might be:
Contemporary Theatre records
John D. Smith papers
The sorting title might be:
Smith (John D.) papers
Contemporary Theatre records
We only have use for a "filing" title used for sorting purposes and we
follow some existing best practice models of encoding the filing title
as a second <titleproper> element with the "type" attribute set to
"filing". Search NWDA best practices for more details. Another
alternative is to use the "type" attribute of <unittitle>.
