The Free Library of Philadelphia will be announcing an opening for the position of
Library Administrator for the Philadelphia Regional Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped.
The position will be formally announced March 22, 2010 and applications will be
accepted until April 24, 2010. The application along with full job description,
qualifications, and salary information will be available March 22 at
http://www.phila.gov/personnel/announce/current/jol_open.html.
Start date of July 1, 2010 is anticipated.
This is a civil service position with a Philadelphia residency requirement:
The Administrator is in charge of the Library for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped, a leased facility of 30,000 sq. ft. The LBPH is funded by Commonwealth
Libraries of Pennsylvania with an annual budget of $1.4 million. The Philadelphia
Regional LBPH works closely with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Pittsburgh
Regional LBPH.
There are more than 1 million items in the Philadelphia collection: large print, braille,
cassette, and digital. There are about 13,000 registered readers. The LBPH uses CUL
software (Consortium of User Libraries) for its integrated library system.
The staff consists of 25 FTEs; there is an active volunteer program as well.
The applicant must have a fifth year degree from an accredited school of library
science, five years of librarian experience providing public service, which has included
at least two years providing library services for the blind and physically handicapped
and at least two years in a second supervisory level capacity (supervisor of supervisors)
in a large public library. Ability to read braille is a plus (additional advantage).
