Hi Mark
Major brands issues:
Sony tapes from the 70's , white case (pre lnx, chx, etc) the hub breaks
down where the fastener holds the tape and must be replaced (80-90% of
tapes).
Scotch 3M used foam instead of felt for head contact. Foam disintegrates
and dirties the tape, the transport and your hands. Must be vacuumed off
and tape played on a back tension player such as Nak
Same goes for 70's Ampex with black plastic case.
Off brand:
Big Ben, RKL, ACME, adhesive gone dry and must be replaced. Generally,
most 70's tapes have no adhesive left in my experience. Please publish
the results when done so that we can all use this valuable resource.
