I know I'm gonna look stupid for asking this, but what about putting the 
tape on a little dolly and just wheel it around? I do that with a lot of 
things that I need to move. Once mounted it will be a breeze and then 
you can use the technics. If people ask you why you are walking a tape 
recorder, tell them it costs less than keeping a dog. ;-)
