This is very sad news to me.
When I was a student at Washington University some time back, I listened
to KFUO quite frequently and even won tickets to St. Louis Symphony
Orchestra concerts from them.
One day, when I was sick of studying, I strolled over to the station from
the nearby campus. I walked in, told ’em I was a student and listener and
I asked if they ever gave tours.
“Well, we don’t have anything special scheduled, but come on in!”
Various staff members then interrupted their day to walk me around and
show me EVERYTHING that might have been even remotely of interest. The
warmth and kindness of the staff made a big impression on me. They even
asked if I had any requests for the upcoming listener-request block and I
said, “Sure, I could use a dose of Shostakovich 5 or Mahler 5...if that
fits into your plans.”
“Tune in,” was all they said.
During the next request program, the announcer ran down the list of what
was to be played and said something along the lines of, “We have a special
double-nickel double-feature: the Shostakovich 5th Symphony followed by
the Mahler 5th Symphony. Charles, we hope you’re listening!”
I sure was and had a magnificent break from some very difficult computer
program debugging courtesy of the very good folks at KFUO.
