YUI is the "Yahoo! User Interface Library" (http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/ ). It's complicated, but they usually (I think) go out of their way to make sure that they provide innovative features that are also accessible for screen readers and the like.
In the example that I sent, the data is coming from here:
http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/examples/datatable/assets/js/data.js
(scan down to "bookorders")
A container list could be treated the same way, or it could be taken directly as XML, or it could also be output straight into an HTML table, etc.
Here's yet another example (where the data is output in an HTML table), which uses the MooTools javascript library:
http://phatfusion.net/sortabletable/
So, I'd say that the possibilities for delivering the data online are quite robust (especially if you use a javascript library like jQuery, YUI, MooTools, etc.). It just comes down to what kind of data you have (and if you'd need to make it more machine friendly, as Ethan mentions).

No, no specific collection -- I just want the functionality in general, for any EAD finding aid. That's a pretty cool example, even though I have no idea how it works LOL! Is it pulling from a database, or actually resorting an HTML table? Or straight from XML? I've never heard of YUI.

No, but I've wanted to do the same... well, I've wanted to do the same for born-digital portions of inventories, wherein the data from any sort-able column could be generated and encoded automatically (date, title, file size, format, etc.). So, even though I don't know of any EAD examples that illustrate this, there are plenty of other examples online (here's one: http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/examples/datatable/dt_basic_clean.html ).
Do you have a container list from a specific collection in mind?

Does anyone know of any examples of delivering EAD finding aids in such a way that the inventory section can be sorted in different ways (by container, by title, by date) ?
