I agree with Jack Hall. The subfield $c should be used very sparingly for "field of endeavor". Too often a name will be established with a subfield $c and later it is modified or deleted.
[Below examples truncated to save space.]
An authority record with subfield $c created because someone didn't know an authority record existed.:

The record below with a subfield $c was deleted in favor of an undifferentiated name authority record.

A good example of two problems with subfield $c is this now deleted record. The name is now added to the undifferentiated name record.

If one cataloger has "A Stadium story" and uses $c they will use "Producer" or "Editor", or both; another library has "The American ruling class" and might use $c "Director" so duplicate/conflicting name authority records are created. All of these terms, by the way are Relator terms which is another issue. If a bib record has a heading like
"Kirby, John, $ceditor, producer, director $eproducer"
what does that look like to the users? I don't think relator terms should ever be used in subfield $c.
Another issue I have with subfield $c data is the various ways it is entered. Computer processing doesn't care but consistency helps the human eye quickly identify information being viewed/sought.
