I am submitting this for Brian; we just switched email systems at LC and there seems to be a glitch.

Subject: Deep-sea oil drilling disasters in sf?
Given all the news about the disastrous consequences of the BP platform in the Gulf, and the prognosis for it to get much worse long before it gets better--I wonder if any writers have used the idea of a ecologically destructive oil spill in stories? Or did such an event seem too prosaic or unlikely? I'm thinking here of a spill resulting from drilling directly into the sea, rather than from a tanker a la Exxon Valdez.
Ironically, today such a well disaster seems far more likely than many other typical sf motifs resulting in apocalyptic types of outcomes!
