Not strictly true; though not Dolby, a friend of mine used to use dbx
in front of a cheap DAT deck, which gave -120 S/N on 16 bit. In the
1980s!
You can use pre/post NR as a two way process between any two devices,
though it is hardly needed with modern digital. NR has been used for
STL links, FM radio, etc.
But granted, hardly necessary.
